Rails 3.0.5, ruby 1.8.7 patch level 334 on Snow Leopard OS X

Same issue occurs without rvm.

I've had a similar problem a few times, and it was always because I had Ruby compiled with the incorrect OpenSSL. Do you have OpenSSL installed through MacPorts? If you do you need to point your Ruby installation at /opt/local when you compile it.
