If you use a Fixnum as a symbol, you get a warning regardless of $VERBOSE

ruby-1.8.7-p302 > puts $VERBOSE
false
=> nil
ruby-1.8.7-p302 > "string".send(:reverse.to_i)
(irb):2: warning: do not use Fixnums as Symbols
=> "gnirts"
=end
