Feature #4698
closeddrop Ruby license completely
Description
In Ruby 1.9.3, the licensing of Ruby has been switched to (Ruby-specific
license detailed in COPYING) or (2-clauses BSD license).
Given that
(1) a recipient can choose to comply to one or the other license
(2) The BSD license is very permissive
(3) The BSD license gives all the permissions given by the Ruby license (and
some more) with less restrictions
I don't see why a recipient would choose to comply to the Ruby license instead
of the BSD license.
Therefore, I think that the Ruby license should be dropped completely, which
has the immediate advantage of making it easier for legal departements to
understand the Ruby licensing situation.
The additional restrictions could be turned as non-binding recommendations
and documented in the README.

You should read the thread from [ruby-core:31978] again.

I had forgotten that we had this discussion already, sorry. I think that the ruby-core discussion documents fairly the status on this, and we have to agree to disagree.
Feel free to close that bug.
