Backport #7011: Please backport r33830 to ruby_1_9_3

I would to request backport of r33830 to 1.9.3 branch so other warnings can be caught when compiling.

I tested locally and revision applies without major issues (except for ChangeLog)

Please confirm and I can backport the change myself.
