I see more and more extensions and ruby code using this and yet it is undocumented. Eric posted this - http://blade.nagaokaut.ac.jp/cgi-bin/scat.rb/ruby/ruby-core/60741 and if it can be added to README.EXT it would be pretty awesome.

documentation I wrote is reasonably correct, but I prefer others review
it, too.
